I’m Shuying, the founder and lead architect of Sylda Studio.
Our practice focuses on creating thoughtful, contemporary spaces where architecture and interior design come together to serve people and place.
With more than 15 years of international professional experience and architectural practice in the Netherlands, I bring a broad and cross-cultural perspective to the Amsterdam-based studio and to every collaboration with clients. Over the years of working in the Netherlands, we have built a strong local network of contractors, carpenters, and engineers across different disciplines within the building industry. This allows us to provide clients with trusted expertise and a well-coordinated process from design through construction.

OUR DESIGN APPROACH
At Sylda Studio, the connection and intention between fine arts, architecture, and interior design forms the foundation of our design approach. We combine creative vision with technical expertise to create spaces that are functional, refined, and feasible in practice.
Our design process begins with listening. Every collaboration starts with open dialogue and a careful understanding of the existing context — the site, its story, and the client’s personality and ambitions. Through site studies, contextual exploration, and conceptual development, we aim to uncover the essence of each project. This process leads to bespoke architectural and interior solutions that are both purposeful and emotionally engaging.

FROM CONCEPT TO COMPLETION
Concept Design
This phase begins with ideas. Based on your aspirations and initial brief, I translate key concepts into preliminary layouts, mood boards, sketches, and visual references. The goal is to build a shared vision — a strong functional and aesthetic foundation that defines the direction of the project.
Preliminary Design
Once the concept is aligned, the design is developed in greater depth. At this stage, you’ll begin to experience the space through 2D plans and 3D visualizations. Layouts, atmospheres, and spatial qualities are refined, and I introduce proposals for materials, furniture, and fittings. Together, we shape a design that feels both cohesive and expressive of your intent.
Final Design
In the final design stage, the project is translated into a comprehensive drawing and documentation set, ensuring clarity and feasibility during construction. These detailed documents — including ceiling layouts, lighting and electrical plans, and material specifications — are shared with you and the contractor to maintain precision and alignment throughout the technical phase.
Aesthetic Guidance
As the project moves into construction, I remain actively involved to preserve the design’s integrity. I assist with supplier selection, coordinate with contractors, and review final material and technical choices. Flexibility is key, as on-site adjustments are often required; I work collaboratively to ensure that every solution remains true to the design vision. Site visits and aesthetic supervision are part of this dynamic phase — when ideas materialize and the design comes vividly to life.
FRAMEWORK & COLLABORATION
Clear communication, professional collaboration, and coordination between all parties are an essential part of our way of working. Throughout the different phases of the project, we work closely with clients, consultants, contractors, and suppliers to ensure a clear and well-organized design and construction process.
Our services and collaborations are based on the DNR 2011 (De Nieuwe Regeling 2011), the standard terms and conditions for architects, designers, and consulting engineers in the Netherlands. This professional framework defines the responsibilities, rights, and agreements for all parties involved throughout the collaboration.
